Culture Blooms: Celebrating the Creative Heart of Athens
There is a distinct magic to the historic river towns of the Hudson Valley, and it is entirely driven by the people who dedicate their lives to building community. On Thursday, September 10, 2026, the creative spirit of our region will be on full display as the Athens Cultural Center (ACC) hosts its 3rd Annual Fundraising Gala: Culture Blooms.
For those of us who live upstate—or those exploring Greene County's active real estate market—this annual celebration is the perfect window into what makes Athens such an inviting place to call home.

Honoring Our Community's Pillars
This year, the Athens Cultural Center introduces the inaugural Perennial Award, created to celebrate individuals whose enduring dedication and service allow local culture to grow and bloom year after year.
Carol Pfister (Inaugural Honoree): Since moving to Athens in 1997, Carol has been the quiet, steady heartbeat of the community. Serving as the ACC’s Treasurer and Bookkeeper for nearly twenty-five years, she has brought incredible precision and care to the non-profit's operations. Beyond the boardroom, she founded the Village of Athens Flower Program, is a founder of the beloved Athens Victorian Stroll, and consistently volunteers her time delivering meals to homebound seniors. Like the flowers she tends, her service has taken deep root in Athens.
Denise McCarroll & Chef Salah Alygad: As the operators of Seconds Restaurant on Main Street in Athens, Denise and Salah have built a culinary anchor where "everybody knows your name." Denise, a lifelong Greene County resident, has spent her career greeting regulars and newcomers alike with unwavering warmth. Executive Chef Salah Alygad, who rose from prestigious culinary roles including banquet chef at the United Nations, brings four decades of craftsmanship to every plate—blending fine American cuisine with his Mediterranean roots. Together, they make the heart of Athens a warmer, more delicious place to gather.
The Value of Upstate Connections
When searching for country properties or modern cabin retreats upstate, it is vital to look beyond structural engineering and acreage. You are also investing in the social fabric of your new neighborhood.
As an Earlton resident, I am incredibly proud to support the Athens Cultural Center. Their commitment to offering accessible, year-round arts and educational programming for all ages is a testament to why Greene County remains such a thriving, high-value region for new home buyers and long-term residents alike.
